Built in 1800, Can Bech is at the heart of the village of Fontanilles, in the Catalan region of Baix Emporda. Situated at the top of a hill, it enjoys spectacular views of the Medes Islands, the National Park of Montgri, the river Ter and the foothills of the Gavarres.
For many years the farmhouse has been in the ownership of the Bech family, who have stamped their history on it over the ages.
In 1980, they opened the house as a restaurant, which became renowned throughout the region. This lead to the creation of their signature dessert, figs in syrup, which became a favourite of the clientele, and moved them to consider making the product on a commercial basis.
The experience of the family in the world of gastronomy, encouraged them to produce new homemade products, such as jams, sauces and chutneys, under the trade name of Can Bech.
At the same time, family affairs caused them to seek a change of direction and to offer a new service to their customers, which has resulted in the rehabilitation of the farmhouse as a “casa rural” (country hotel), known as Can Bech Rural.
